Ocean Baptism

This is the ocean baptism of Kerri Richmond - 19 year old Young Lady - she didn't want many pictures. The ocean was a little rough and a huge wave helped with the immersion part! Elder Fangulua jumping out of the tide - he had his shoes on, Elder Peterson didn't -matter of fact a wave 'knocked me down' after he had performed the ordinance!! the last two pictures are of the elders, us and Kerri and her friend Anne, plus Paul - who Elder Smith baptized in October, he is our branch mission leader - we started about an hour later than we planned and it got dark quickly at the ocean.

More flowers and trees

These trees are so tall and have pretty bright orange flowers at the top of them. This is another kind of flower, next is lily pads on a pond, and then the tree called Flames of the Forest - a little closer up.

Memorial Service

On Monday, January 24, the whole mission went to the Spanish Town Chapel for a memorial service for Elder Walker - who was shot and killed a week before. I didn't take many pictures, one of the photos of Elder Walker - Elder Powell looking at them, one of Elder Smith with our two young elders with their suits on, and one of the missionaries at Pizza Hut after the service. Elder Gary Coleman, a general authority - a seventy and in our area presidency - came from the Dominican Republic. President Hendricks conducted. The whole mission sang: Called to Serve, as the opening song. Elder Davis Emery (who was driving the van when the bullet came through it) - gave the opening prayer. The first remarks were from Elder Luke - Elder Walker's companion. He spoke briefly about his love and delight in serving with Elder Walker. He told of the teaching apt. 3 days before he was killed, when Elder Walker gave his last public testimony - and he would miss his big grin.
Sister Hendricks spoke briefly also - quoted hymn 293 - about losing a friend - she spoke to Tremain (Elder Walker's sister and only surviving immediate family member) - she said her brother was a real influence for good.
Elder Sheafermeyer and Sister Daniels sang a beautiful duet - "Consider the Lilies of the Field". Pres. Hendricks said that we are not saddened at his passing - we do not mourn at the death of a righteous man. Elder Walker received a mission transfer from earth to heaven! President Blake of Elder Walker's home branch - Sav-la-mar, spoke about at a time of grief we can be comforted - "I'll see him again - Elder Walker would like us to read our scriptures, follow our prophet.
Sister Judy Coleman said when she was 5 years old and her sister was 1, her dad was fighting in Italy in WWII - and her mother died in a house fire at a relatives. Then she told about Elder Coleman's sister and husband being killed in a car wreck and leaving 6 children age 14 to 4 years old. These things happen in life - but we need the perspective of eternity where there is no beginning and no end. Our challenge is to be happy here and live the gospel.
Elder Coleman - Pres. Monson asked Tuesday if I would come and represent the 1st Presidency and the Quorum of the 12 here. Elder Coleman met and interviewed Elder Walker last May, and remembered his valiant testimony of the restored gospel. He cautioned all involved to not place blame on themselves - if I had done this, etc. He probably was surprised at the fast entry to the spirit world - then when he saw his beloved mother (who had died December 4, 2010) - he hasn't lost anything - he has gained. He was an inspiration and finished his work here. Closing song: Beautiful Zion, built above. Closing Prayer, Jamaican Elder Allen - AP to the President. After the service several of the missionaries went to Pizza Hut and enjoyed the fellowship and lunch with each other. It was a calming day and very meaningful.

more Jamaican Life

In the middle of town is a pretty city park - Turtle River Park. The story is that sea turtles used to come on land there and lay their eggs. Now they have reserve for turtles - mostly abandoned by people. They have 9 different kinds and last year several got out and went to the river! they found them and now have a fence around their pond. Next picture is of the scaffolding around a building - good use of poles, right? The last two pictures are of a typical woodshop - outdoors, with piles of wood around, and the men making beautiful furniture - skilled craftsmanship - notice the chairs on the far right and the tables on the left. There are many of these - this one is larger than most we've seen.

More river rafting

More pictures of our Saturday adventure - the guide took us through the "Tunnel of Love" - yes we kissed! This is our kitchen for our lunch stop - Elder Smith on the bamboo 'picnic' table - not that comfy! Across from our lunch stop was this old stone building and iron gate - we thought it might have something to do with irrigation (don't need it - it rains lots here!) - but the Jamaicans told us it was a Slave Dungeon - isn't that awful? These women were doing the family wash in the river as we floated by - hug your washing machines!!

Banana Boats

Here are pictures of our Senior Missionary river rafting trip. The embarking point - bamboo banana boats - each 'captain' called out your name and then you got on...with your companion! The boats last about 5 months our guide said - then the bamboo gets water logged and they build a new one. The river was beautiful and a slow ride - these are the bet 'rapids' - not quite the Salmon, huh? At the end of the float we went under this bridge and there was the ocean! It was lots of fun to be with the other couples and Mission Pres. and wife.

Turtle Park, Ocho Rios

Tryall Water Wheel

On our way back from Lucea last Tuesday we stopped to take pictures of this 200+ year old - still functioning - water wheel. It is much larger than the one close to Ocho Rios - and with water still turning it - neat! The last sugar cane was harvested in 1918, then it became a coconut grove until the mid '30s, now it is a golf club and guest house - beautiful! google it to learn more.

Brother James

This is Brother James - he says he is 99 years old - the church records say 97 - but what does it matter? He goes out on the ocean on calm days to fish for his dinner -then sells any extra to other church members. Here he is coming in for lunch - the member lady next door helps to take care of him. Her 7-8 year old daughter went out in the water to help get the boat in, her 9-10 year old son just stood and asked if I would take his picture - I did and then deleted it! Sister Russell took this picture - his fly is not down - it is broken! Here are the fish -all different kinds - red polkadot, blue stripped, etc. He said he would eat them. This is his house - pretty simple, huh? The green house behind his is the family that helps him. He is very strong in the church and the second Jamaican house I have been in that had a bookcase full of books!! Loved meeting him and sharing in his strong spirit.

Salvation Army School in Lucea

We went with the Russells to a school ran by the Salvation Army - they admit any and all - especially those who can't afford public school - aren't the children beautiful?! We visited the 3,4,5 year old classrooms and you could hear the children whispering - Look at the white people! The LDS Church has given them all their computers for the school and all the cribs for their daycare unit. The director was delightful and very appreciative of all that the Church has done for them. Sister Russell is hugging the three year olds - and I loved watching them on the playground.
